Where are All the Great Action Sports Web Sites?

July 18th, 2007

I’m kind of blown away by the lack of quality in advertising and web design for many action sports companies. That’s pretty inconsistent, considering the designs and styles of clothing in the action sports industry is awesome especially if you look at snowboard fashion, swimwear, and casual surf apparel. I’ve seen it done well by some companies, but I’ve seen it done poorly, more often than not. If you look through the pages of any surf, snowboard, or skate magazine, you’ll see some great artwork in some of the ads, and some total crap in others.

Likewise, there are some great action sports sites out there, like Lat34.com, Hurley, Billabong, Quiksilver and Roxy, but those are well-budgeted companies and if they didn’t have great sites, it would be an embarrassment. I think one of the problems is that there is a lack of understanding of marketing by action sports companies, and there is a lack of understanding of action sports in the marketing and advertising companies, so the two are not connecting.

I’ve seen one company that does an awesome job with action sports web design and advertising. There are others, but they are few and far between. As an action sports enthusiast, and an avid snowboarder and surfer, I’d like to see action sports companies do a better job with their marketing and web sites, and take it to the next level.
